As we want you to know who we are as a company, we’d also like you to know who we are as a team! This month we continue to spotlight our awesome staff members that make Sombra Homes who we are today.
We shine the spotlight on Tom O’Connor, Construction Superintendent with over 18 years at Sombra Homes. Fresh from vacation, Tom took the time to share a little about his job at Sombra and what he likes to do in his spare time.
Tell us about your Job at Sombra Homes
I'm the senior Construction Superintendent, with 18 years at Sombra Homes. I manage the construction of custom homes for Sombra, mostly in Oro Valley, including in Stone Canyon and other home sites. At the moment I am managing the constructuction of four custom homes.
My job includes overseeing the subcontractors that work on our homes, as well as interacting with our customers to make sure the build is going the way they want it to. This makes for lots of interaction between me, the customer, and our subcontractors to make sure everything goes as planned. As a customer you have a picture of what you want your house to look like, and it's my job to pull it out of your head and make you happy. I use your descriptions, pictures, drawings and explanations to make it look and function they way you want.
What motivates you at work?
I love the team we've built with all of our subcontractors. One thing I really like about Sombra is I can always do the right thing - I never have to question it. I just do the right thing for the client to make sure they house is constructed correctly, and Sanjay (the owner) always backs me up.
There is also lots of variety. Even though it's another house, there is always something different about them so it's not the same routine every day.
How do you like to spend your free time?
I like to hike, and I like to go to San Diego to hang out on the beach and relax. I like all kinds of outdoor activities. My favorite places to hike are Pima Canyon, Ventana Canyon, and Catalina State Park.
What's your favorite guilty pleasure?
Ice cream - chocolate chip.
If you could travel anywhere, where would it be and why?
Alaska. I like the idea of wide open spaces and lots of outdoor activities.
What's something about you that would surprise people?
I have a pro-street, fat tire Harley Davidson motorcycle. I like ride over to Tumamoc Hill 3 times a week. I've been walking Tumamoc Hill for 30 years. It's spiritual - it's always the place I go to think.
What's your favorite food?
Anything I can't cook. I know how to cook - I used to cook at the Fire Department, but I like to go to a restaurant and order dishes I can't cook at home. The other day I ordered an amazing Chilean sea bass at the Arizona Inn. That's my favorite so far.
What's your favorite part of working at Sombra Homes?
Seeing the finished product when we finish a house. I was in the doctor's office the other day and picked up a copy of the Tucson Lifestyle magazine. I'm looking a some of the custom houses, and something about this one house was familiar. I was thinking "Wow, this is a really nice house!". Turns out, it was one I built for Sombra Homes. I remember thinking, "Whoever built this house really knew what they were doing!" Seeing the house in a magazine like that, with all the furniture and all done up, I didn't even recognize it at first. Seeing the completed project is very satisfying and rewarding.
